Our journey began in the ponds of Madhubani, Bihar, when makhana seeds were first identified and hand-popped for personal use.
The Beginning
Our journey began in the ponds of Madhubani, Bihar, when makhana seeds were first identified and hand-popped for personal use.
From Cultivation to Trade
By expanding pond ownership and cultivation in the Madhubani region, raw makhana trading began at scale. This period marked growing recognition and the foundation of trust within the local makhana community.
Taking Makhana Global
The second generation introduced structured trading, global outreach, and convenience packaging. Launching branded makhana products helped position makhana as a viable, market-ready food beyond regional boundaries.
Scaling with Farmers
With rising demand for makhana as a healthy snack, scalable production was set up in Bihar. A network of over 5000 farmers was developed, strengthening the belief that growers and processors must grow together.
Innovation and Value Addition
The third generation brought modern food processing and product innovation into the business. A state-of-the-art facility was established to produce roasted and flavoured makhana, expanding reach across India and export markets.
Makhana Farms
Building on decades of experience, Makhana Farms carries this legacy forward with a focus on premium raw and flavoured makhana for wholesale and bulk supply. Rooted in tradition and driven by quality, we continue to grow with our farmers and partners.
Quality has always been at the core of everything we do. While working with a natural superfood like makhana, we follow a disciplined approach from cultivation to processing and packaging, ensuring excellence at every stage. As a plant-based product, makhana requires careful handling, which is why we focus on minimal processing to retain its natural purity, texture, and nutritional value. Our practices are guided by research-backed methods and continuous quality checks, ensuring every batch meets consistent standards. We operate under the guidance of the Darbhanga Makhana Research Institute and the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, strengthening our commitment to scientifically driven quality and food safety.
Makhana is a nutritious, light, and satisfying food enjoyed across all age groups. Commonly consumed as a wholesome snack, it is valued for being filling yet easy to digest, making it suitable for everyday consumption.
Botanically known as fox nut or gorgon nut, makhana is an aquatic crop grown in stagnant water bodies such as ponds, tanks, and wetlands. It is a naturally organic, non-cereal food rich in essential nutrients. Cultivated mainly in Bihar, West Bengal, and Assam, makhana has deep agricultural roots in eastern India, with Bihar alone contributing more than 80 percent of the country’s total production.
